Editing Blog

My partner Kaitlyn and I spent the last two classes editing our music video. We selected our shots first. We decided to use our storyboard to help us remember the correct order. This process took about 30 minutes. Then, we had to adjust each clip. Since both of us were in the video, one person had to press record and the go to their spot. Therefore, we had to cut out a lot of the beginning of most clips. We also had to trim the ends for the same reason. Once all of the videos were cut to the appropriate length, the video was too long. Instead of the video being 1 minute and 15 seconds, the video was about 1 minute and 20 seconds long.

In addition to this problem, the first clip was also sideways. This was the clip with the pan that I filmed on my phone. We spent 45 minutes trying to figure out how to flip it. Unfortunately, there was no button that said "rotation" and it was extremely difficult to find. We had to select the clip, and open the effects editor. Then we had to select effects and press 2D. Once we pressed that, a sidebar appeared that said "rotation". I typed in 270 degrees to flip it so it would match the other videos. We then pressed save changes, and watched the video. About 15 seconds later, our computer died.

For the phone call scenes, we had to change the color. The scenes are supposed to be flashbacks, so we made it black and white. We then made some of the clips even shorter. We had to do this because our video was about 5 seconds too long. Once this was completed, we detached the original audio. We were afraid that the original audio would play with the music. Luckily, it didn't take long to detach. Once this process was completed, we inserted the audio. The audio was also too long, so we had to fit it to scale. We finished the editing process, and will look over our work next class.

Filming Blog: Reshooting

My partner Kaitlyn and I finished filming the first day we filmed. However, when we were rereading the rubric in class, we noticed that we didn't include a pan. We decided to redo the first clip of me putting on lipstick. We thought of this because our music video ends with a tilt. We also did not want to check out a camera for one clip because the filming process would only take about 3-10 minutes. This would have been unfair to all the other groups that still needed to film. Therefore, I used my phone camera. Kaitlyn did not come over because it was only one shot. Because of this, I had to film myself. I only did the scene 2 or 3 times until I decided that it looked good.

Overall, it was pretty challenging. I couldn't zoom in on my front camera, so I had to flip my phone the other way. Luckily, I was standing in front of a mirror. Therefore, I could look at the reflection of the phone. I pointed the phone to the left of me. Then when it began to film, I slowly moved it to the right. I stopped when the camera got to me. Then I did the scene according to plan, and stopped recording. I left a few seconds at the end of the scene when I stopped recording, but I can cut that part out. I did a few takes, and Kaitlyn and I will decide on a shot during the editing process.

Other than that, I didn't film. However, we did discuss some editing things. We talked about what type of transitions we would use. We decided not to do the phone scene before the music. This scene would've been one of the characters texting the other person,"I can't wait to see you." Or something along those lines. Kaitlyn and I are proud that we finished filming, but we enjoyed the process. During the filming process, we were very focused and therefore finished filming in a timely manner. We also started editing since we finished filming. That way we can take more time to work on the details and try different things.

Filming blog: My house

Today my partner Kaitlyn and I filmed our music video. Kaitlyn came to my house at 10, and then we started getting ready. We quickly did our hair and makeup, and we filmed our first two makeup scenes in the bathroom. These were extreme close ups at eye level. We then did all of our living room scenes. These were also filmed at eye level. we had trouble filming one scene in particular. In that scene, I had to pour a blue "poison" into the plant. Instead of pouring it into the plant, it spilled onto the floor. We had to redo this scene many times because we kept messing up.

We didn't stick to our schedule either. Instead of taking the entire day, we only filmed for 3 1/2 hours. We were extremely focused and we filmed in smart ways. For example, we did all of our bathroom scenes at the same time and then all of our living room scenes. This was easier than going back and forth. We also realized that we had to change outfits for the telephone scene because it was supposed to be a flashback. Therefore, we put on normal t-shirts and pajama pants. For the phone call scenes we also decided to lip sync to the song. We then realized that we couldn't record the phone scene in the same location because then it would seem like they're in the exact same spot while on the phone. So Kaitlyn sat on my bed, and I went into the dining room.

In the kitchen scenes, we wanted a high angle. In order for us to do this, we had to put the camera on the tripod angle angle it downwards. Then we placed the tripod onto a table and hit record. This was difficult placement because of the size of the tripod. However, we did it, and the scene turned out nicely. After filming, we dumped the footage onto our google drives. It took 4 hours to download 88 videos. We also took at least two takes of every scene so that we can have a selection when the editing process begins. Overall, the filming process went extremely smoothly. The props and costumes worked exactly how we wanted them to, which made the filming process easier.

Storyboard For Music Video

Kaitlyn and I created our storyboard and the plot of the music video. We kept some of the same of the ideas, but we also changed a lot. For example, we are cutting out the costume changes, and we aren't going to become more "beaten up" as the song goes on.

Before the music starts, there will be a close up of my phone with a text message to Kaitlyn saying "I'll c u soon!" Then the music will start with an extreme close up of Stephanie putting on lipstick. It will then transfer to Kaitlyn's lips. The next scene will be when Stephanie is putting on eyeshadow, then it is going to cut into Kaitlyn putting on eyeshadow. The next scene will be Kaitlyn and Stephanie talking which leads into Kaitlyn walking to the kitchen. Kaitlyn will pour "poison" into a clear glass cup, but in reality it will be food coloring. The next scene will be Stephanie swinging a mallet. This will be an extreme close up, so the audience can only see the hand and the mallet. The next scene will take place in the living room. Kaitlyn will be sitting down with the drinks, while Stephanie is walking in with the mallet behind her back.

While Kaitlyn is looking away, Stephanie pours her drink into the plant. Kaitlyn goes to fill up her drink when she notices that it's empty. While Kaitlyn walks to the kitchen, Stephanie follows her. Stephanie pulls out the mallet and hits Kaitlyn. The screen goes black for 2-4 seconds. Then the rest of the scenes are in black and white. It shows a medium close up of Stephanie talking on an old looking phone. Then it will transfer to Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn then drops the phone while falling to the ground. The last scene may change depending on how we can record the fall in a safe and efficient way. If Kaitlyn can't fall in a safe way, then the scene will just be the fake phone falling.

Planning for Music Video

My partner Kaitlyn and I are going to be filming a music video to "Secret" by the pierces. We will be filming in my house. We wanted to go for a more neutral color theme, and my house is filled with those colors. If anything unexpected that happens to my house, we will go to Kaitlyn's house. We will also be taking safety precautions. One of the props is a mallet which can be dangerous. Therefore, we will have a first aid kit on stand by, and the mallet will be untouched unless used for filming. We will always put the mallet away to ensure that nobody trips on it, or accidentally swings it around.

We will also have a variety of costumes. We wanted to go for an elegant neutral theme, so we're planning on wearing formal single colored dresses. We will each have 2-3 dresses that are in different colors. We will also be wearing heels and have fancy jewelry. This gives the audience the idea that the teen girls are on the wealthy side. The props that we are planning to include are a mallet, makeup, a glass cup, food dye, and an old fashion telephone. The makeup will be used to give the video more of a "girly" aesthetic at first, and the music video will slowly proceed to get more suspenseful. The glass cup will be for when the "poison" is added to the drink. This represents that the girls hate each other. The mallet also has similar reasoning as the glass cup and food dye. The old fashion telephone will be for the talking scene. In the music, there is a scene when the two girls are talking, so we will use a fake phone.

We will be filming over the weekend. Kaitlyn will come over to my house at 9:00. We will do our hair and makeup until 10:00. Then we will proceed to film the lipstick scene until 10:10. After this, we will film until 12:30. We will then take a quick lunch break until 1:15. We will then switch outfits and add more makeup to make ourselves look injured until 2:00. We will then film from 2:00 to 5:00. Then we will have another costume and makeup change until 5:30. And then film until 8:30. Our plans will most likely change, but this is the outline we plan to use.

Introduction to Music Video

We recently finished the commercial project. I've learned a lot from the project including what I should and shouldn't do. The storyboard helped with planning what each scene would look like overall. We figured out the lighting, location, and camera angles. The editing process was more difficult because it was a lot of trial and error. Thankfully, I know how to work the editing software (Pinnacle Studios) now. This will make  the editing process a lot less rigorous.
My partner Kaitlyn and I  decided to do the song "Secret" by the Pierces. It is more of a suspense thriller theme which is what we wanted to do. The song indirectly mentions murder, so the audience can assume that something bad will happen. This song is commonly known for being in the T.V. show Pretty Little Liars, so we are going to take some inspiration from that. We also have a few ideas of how and where we want to film which is helpful. We want to include a darker theme because it fits the suspense thriller genre.
For costumes, we wanted to wear something fancy and plain like a single colored dress. This fits the overall theme because we wanted our actors to seem like rich teenage girls who have a love hate friendship. For lighting, we want to have a few scenes with the silhouette of the actor so the audience can only see the outline of the person. We want to use darker and unnatural light to make it seem more suspenseful. The actors will be Kaitlyn and I, because it would be easier to meet up and record the video. The actors will be nice towards each other, and then start to show their true colors. For makeup, we were thinking of red lipstick at times, and natural looks. As the video progresses, the actors will get more makeup that looks like bruises and cuts. We aren't sure of all props, but we are thinking of using a mallet, glass cups, makeup, and an older phone. We will film mainly in front of white backgrounds, hallways, in my room, and Kaitlyn's dining room.

Editing

Today and Monday my partner and I edited our commercial. Our computer was going extremely slow, so we didn't have all of class to complete it.  Kaitlyn and I both tried to import it, but we eventually figured it out. We then selected our shots. Unfortunately, some of the footage was not there. When we filmed, one of the rhythmic gymnastics scenes didn't save onto the SD so it couldn't be recovered. Then when we were importing footage, the other rhythmic gymnastics scene disappeared. Luckily the scene where I was drinking gatorade was still there. After we selected out shots, we imported them. This process took about 15 minutes.
Then, I put them in the correct order. I then had to trim each individual clip so the shot could be the length that we wanted. There were some uneven cuts in the video, so we removed them to make the video smoother. We kept on rewatching the video to make sure that it was too our liking. I then removed the original sound. However when I cut the blank spaces, the audio became choppy. I then had to go back and fix my mistake. We ended up just deleting the detached audio, and reverted it to its original form. Kaitlyn and I had about 45 minutes of editing time the next class(today). Today we added the sound and captions.
Pinnacle studios gave a few different options for sounds. I selected upbeat music and it gave a list of suggestions. Kaitlyn and I agreed on a sound so I inserted it. We then added the title screen by typing what we wanted to display. Then we typed our script in a similar format to subtitles. We thought that it would be easier to write the words instead of having the music lowered while speaking. We added our entire script and placed it where it seemed fit. Then we had to make sure that the video ran smoothly, and it didn't. I had to close all of the gaps, which made the sound choppy. As i was reinserting the music, Kaitlyn and I found a better sound, so we used that instead. After that our video was complete, and we turned it in.

Almost Editing Blog

Today, my partner and I couldn't work on our blog. This is because pinnacle studios (the editing software we use) is not working. However, we uploaded the file from the desktop to google drive. This process took about 5 minutes. I logged into my account, and selected create new file. I then uploaded we looked at some of our footage. We had good takes, but the camera quality was poor. The videos didn't have much color and it lagged. It looked like we were running in slow motion. I think that we can possible put an effect to reverse the slow motion.

The camera quality wasn't good either. It didn't have a lot of pixels so it looked blurry. We understand that the camera is old, but we are also disappointed with the quality. In addition to this, the color wasn't vibrant. I believe the camera filtered it, so everything has more grey pigment. We will make the most out of it because sports commercial mainly use grey or blue undertones. The sound quality was terrible. We could barely hear anything that was in the original video. In some takes, there was no sound whatsoever. But we did a voice over to fix this.

For the first two scenes, we are planning to do a reverse shot. We will have Kaitlyn running towards the camera, and then have it change to her drinking Gatorade. The first scene would be a tilt. The scene would start at eye level. and as Kaitlyn is running closer, the camera lens slowly went upwards. It will cut back to Kaitlyn running in the opposite direction. Then my rhythmic gymnastics scene would be next, and then cut to me drinking Gatorade. All of the other scenes will hopefully go as planned. Unfortunately, we lost some of our footage. Kaitlyn filmed my rhythmic gymnastics scenes first, but the camera died. When the camera died, we lost all of that footage. However, we did re-shoot those scenes that same day because we feared that this could happen.

Filming

Today my partner and I filmed our gatorade commercial. We went over to the senior patio first to film the rhythmic gymnastics scene. We filmed the same move about 10-15 times. Then we filmed my drinking scene in which I just drank gatorade. We also filmed this a few times. Then the camera died. My partner had checked the battery when we began filming, and it was completely charged, but it still died in 20 minutes. We then went to get another camera and proceeded to go to the building 5 stairs. I set up the tripod to the highest setting, and put the SD card inside the camera. However, the SD card got stuck, and the camera wouldn't film.
I then went back to the classroom, and got the SD card out. I went back downstairs and put the SD card back into the camera. We then pressed record and filmed me going up the stairs and Kaitlyn going down the stairs. We met halfway and gave each other a high five. This scene was extremely tiring for us because we were running on the stairs for about 10 minutes. We then decided that we took enough takes, and set up for the next scene in the same location. We put 5 unopened gatorade bottles next to each other and had the camera focus on the product. Then, Kaitlyn and I sat on the bottom step and pretended to talk. At the end of scene, we looked at the camera and smiled with a gatorade bottle in our hands. We did this scene about 7 times, and then we proceeded to go to the track field.
Once we got to the track field, we had to find a space where there wasn't people. I then recorded Kaitlyn running towards the camera on the field a few times, and running away from the camera. This allows us to have a variety of different takes. There were a lot of people at the track field because of the physical education class. This made it difficult to get takes where there weren't people in the background. However, I still got some people in the background for some of the shot because it looks more natural to the environment. After we got the takes, I shot Kaitlyn's drinking scene. We recorded this about 4-5 times and I believe that scene turned out really well. Kaitlyn and I were concerned that the footage of the first two scenes were deleted because of the old camera. Therefore, we went to the bleachers and re-shot those scenes. After we finished filming, we dumped the footage onto the computer.

Storyboard

Today my partner and I created our storyboard. Our commercial is for gatorade. Kaitlyn drew the pictures, while Stephanie wrote the camera angles, movements, location, etc. We both decided on what we will be doing in each scene, and where it will be located. We are strictly using elements from sports commercials. In the first scene, Kaitlyn is running towards the camera on the track field. It will be a tilt, and it will be filmed as a wide shot, and at eye level. In the second scene, Kaitlyn will be drinking the gatorade at the track field. This portrays her needing nutrients, so she is drinking the product. It will be a medium close up. In the third scene, Stephanie will be doing rhythmic gymnastics at the senior patio. It will be a tracking shot filmed at eye level. In the fourth scene, Stephanie will be drinking the Gatorade in a medium close up. During the fifth scene, Kaitlyn and Stephanie will be going up and down the stairs in different directions. We will meet at the middle and give each other a high-five. This will be a low angle next to the building five stairs. Lastly, the sixth scene will be a close up of the drinks (at eye level), with Kaitlyn and Stephanie in the background. This will also be by the building five stairs. During the filming process, we will predominantly use natural lighting.

Editing Lesson Blog

Today I learned a lot.  The lesson started with the functions of a camera and its parts. We were taught how to turn the camera on and off, and how to begin and stop recording. There is a silver button with a red line that the camera person presses to start or stop recording. In addition to this, there is a device that you can attach to the camera, that also attaches to the tripod. This allows the camera to record oblique angles, tilts, pans, etc. The tripod has 3 legs and it can extend to about 4 or 5 feet. This will make filming much easier, and more convenient. There is also a setting that you can roll to make the camera even higher. This is good for high angles to make the actor/object on screen look smaller and vulnerable.
We also learned how to dump and import the camera footage. To dump the footage, the individual has to open pinnacle studios, log in and open a new folder. They then have to name the folder in correlation to the project. Then you must insert the SD card and press DCIM. All the footage is in chronological order. To import the footage, the individual must be in pinnacle studios and press editing. They have to select the footage that they want to import, and then press start import. AV track 1 is for the title slide, AV track 2 is for the visual footage, and AV track 3 is meant for music and voiceovers. Titles must go above the film. This is the way for the words to be displayed with the shot. The individual would press rendering. Rendering is when the film becomes smooth. If the individual doesn't click this, the film will be choppy, and rough.
Then the editing process begins. This is when the editor makes transitions or adds in effects. The most popular transition for this class is fade and dissolve. The editor can also add text to the film. During the editing process, the team will decide which shots to include, and which shots to delete. After the editing process is complete, the individual will export the file. The individual has to click "file" and then export. Then you must select Mp4 which is the best for visual footage. You must also select the best quality available, and then select start export. The footage will be saved in the file that was selected in the beginning of the process.

Planning Blog for Gatorade Commercial

Today my partner and I began to work on our Gatorade commercial. We decided that we would use cooler colors like blues, whites, and purples. We also drafted our script. We are staying with a motivational mindset, because that's what most energy drink commercials do. We will have dialogue in the majority of our scenes, but not all. We will be speaking, but in a voiceover. Therefore, the audience will not be able to see us speak, but they will hear our correct voices with the scenes that we are in. We have also chosen a slogan for our commercial which will be, "When you give everything, Gatorade gives it back." These will be the final words of the commercial.

We also decided on our costumes and props. Coincidentally, my partner Kaitlyn and I both have the same blue shirt. It also resembles a sports top, so we are going to be matching. We are also going to wear simple black leggings because we both have a few pairs. Therefore, we are matching for the most part. Since Kaitlyn is doing a track scene, she will be wearing white sneakers. On the contrary, I will be doing a rhythmic gymnastic scene, and will have black dance shoes instead. Our props include a spray bottle, hair tie, small towels, gatorade and a rhythmic gymnastics ball. These props will help to further our plot, and make the commercial more interesting.

We also created a schedule. Our class normally begins at 11:30, but my partner and I decided to go during our lunch period so we can start at 11:00. from 11:00-11:25 we will be at the track field to do our opening scene and the drinking Gatorade scene. From 11:30-12:10 we will be doing the rhythmic gymnastics scene and another drinking gatorade scene. The rhythmic gymnastics scene will most likely take longer because the camera will be moving, therefore making it more difficult to film. From 12:10-12:30 we will be doing the running up the stairs and high five scene. Lastly, from 12:30-12:35 we will be doing the close up of the gatorade. Class ends at 1:00 which allows Kaitlyn and I 25 minutes to change locations and give us breaks. If it rains the schedule would alter and we would move outdoor locations indoors.

Research blog: Commercial Conventions

My partner and I chose the topic Gatorade. We had the idea to advertise all of the blue flavors because winter is approaching. We will begin our storyboard soon, but we have an idea of what we want to do. We plan to have a video of somebody running to a gatorade bottle for the opening scene. For the closing scene, we want to have a video of somebody dramatically drinking it. On the editorial side, we want to have a section in slow motion. We will most likely use a split screen too. These are some of our pre research ideas.

From our research, most sport drinks commercials include celebrities. Unfortunately, we do not have celebrities to use so we cannot do this aspect. Many sports companies also use deep voiceovers. This give the audience the impression that a male sports player is speaking. However, my partner and I are both female, so we also cannot do the stereotypical voicemail. These sports companies also have an extremely high budget and have multiple days to complete this. We have a total of 90 minutes and no budget. We still have high hopes for the project.

On a positive note, my partner and I noticed that there are many actions scenes. Our school has a track field and gymnasium that we can use for filming. We can record running and basketball scenes. Our bleacher seats in the gymnasium are also blue, which goes with the “cool blue drink” theme. From the videos we also observed that there were a lot of extreme close ups. My partner and I will show close ups of eyes and side profiles. We also noticed that the commercials showed the product throughout the commercial, but the product had a special section at the end. We will most likely do the same. The music was also extremely upbeat and empowering because it represents a sports or energy drink. -Stephanie W 10/7/19

Introductory

My name is Stephanie W and I am a sophomore in high school. I am currently enrolled in AICE media studies. AICE classes are college level courses. They are graded by a college named Cambridge in England. In this particular  class I will learn about various camera angles, movements, sounds, mis-en-scene, etc. We present what we learn through multiple projects and blogs. I will be blogging every class on this website. Some of the projects I will complete are commercials, short films, and tests.

My first assignment was to create this blog. This will help me understand how to write the blogs and explain the process that I go through in this class. My first project is to create a commercial for a certain topic. My partner and I haven’t chose our project topic. We will select it from different companies that are provided. We think that we will most likely pick Gatorade or Starbucks. Before we start filming, we have to create a storyboard. A storyboard allows you to draw your commercial six seconds at a time.

In addition to storyboarding, we have to create a script. Even if our commercial doesn’t have any dialogue, it is still important to know what background music and diegetic or non-diegetic sounds there will be. After our script and storyboard gets approved, then we can finally begin filming. After filming, we will go into the post production stage. This stage mainly consists of editing. Editing can greatly impact the commercial for multiple reasons. It can help the audience truly understand what is happening and can help them connect to the product. I’m excited to begin this process. -Stephanie W 10/7/19
